ABSRACT
Gary Johnson is known around the world for his work on developing potato varieties. He is best known for the cross- breeding that produced the “Yukon Gold” variety, but altogether he developed and brought 16 potato varieties to market. At one time the top four varieties of potato were his. Gary also discovered, by accidental self-poisoning, that some varieties of potato are toxic, because of high alkaloid content. Gary was a well know curler and prominent in the Guelph Curling Club. Some of his exploits are recounted.
