Harry Brightwell

General practice Stratford 1958-84. Developed Vet. Wholesale Co. 1972. Conservative MP, 1984-93

After graduation in 1956, Dr. Harry Brightwell worked with Dr. Frank Flowers in Sudbury for 18 months before setting up a mixed practice in Stratford. Harry wanted to initiate contact between the Veterinarians in the area and he worked at the formation of the local Large Animal Practitioners Association and the Swine Practitioners Association. He also organized the swine practitioners to start the Veterinary Wholesale Company which buys and distributes veterinary supplies to Practitioners.

While Vice-President of the OVA, which became the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, the licensing body, he guided the formation of what became the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, an organization for Practitioners.

Dr. Brightwell left practice in 1984 after he was nominated to stand for the Federal Conservative party, winning a seat that year. He became Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture. He lost the seat in the election in1993. Harry worked as a Financial Advisor for 7 years before retiring.
