Cancellation Notice: BIOSIS Previews [Biological Abstracts]

Rationale for Cancellation of Library Resource

December 1st, 2015

Title of resource: BIOSIS Previews [Biological Abstracts]

Cost of resource: $71,000 CAD

Reasons for cancellation:

  • High degree of overlap in journals indexed with other similar resources (Web of Science, Zoological Abstracts, Biological Sciences, PubMed)
  • Only 4% (209 titles) are uniquely indexed in this resource when other databases such as Web of Science, Zoological Record, ASFA, CAB Direct, and Medline (PubMed) are considered
  • Low number of distinct uses based on vendor provided data – less than 1,000 in the past 18 months
  • Library's discovery service (PRIMO) provides effective metadata searching across multiple indexes (including many alternatives listed below)
  • On a priority basis, the Library has identified resources where cancellation would not result in the direct loss of full text content to users

Date access will cease: January 1, 2016

Alternate resources:

  • Web of Science
  • Zoological Record
  • Biological Sciences (ProQuest)
  • MedLine/PubMed
  • Cab Direct

General Criteria for Cancellation of Electronic Resources

Cancellation decisions are in most cases based on one or more of the following criteria:

  • Cost: The inflationary costs of scholarly information continue to rise annually. In addition, the Library’s budget is particularly impacted by currency fluctuations (over half of the Library’s scholarly resources are paid for in U.S. funds)
  • Overlap: An extensive content overlap between two similar resources
  • Usage: Past usage of the resource by University of Guelph (including University of Guelph Humber) students, faculty and staff
  • Scholarly need: Alignment of a resource with the University’s curricular and research programs; The scholarly importance of the resource (its centrality to the discipline and to accreditation requirements); the Library will prioritize keeping full-text (e.g. journal subscriptions) over indexes (e.g. BIOSIS, Communications Abstracts)

The decision to cancel a resource is made only after considerable discussion and exploration of alternatives - for more detailed information on the process followed, please refer to the library's Collection Policy.

Note:Zoological Record and Cab Direct do not have metadata indexed in PRIMO. Both databases can be searched independently
