This is Your Library: The Wellness Room
University can be challenging. Being human can be challenging, no matter where we are in life. Hardships and adversity are normal, and sometimes we all need a compassionate person to talk to. That’s why the Student Support Network (SSN) has a dedicated space for students to go find the support they need in the library.
This is your library, and this is your Wellness Room.
What’s the Wellness Room? Why is it in the library?
In 2018, the library partnered with the Student Support Network (SSN) services in an effort to reach more students who may need support. Being one of the busiest building on campus, the library is an ideal location to house the Wellness Room as it’s an easy space for students to drop-by for a visit. The Wellness Room offers drop-in peer support provided by trained student volunteers and is located on the first floor of the library in room 111 (close to the printers). “It is a safe space on campus where students are free to talk about anything going on in their lives,” said Cole Poore-Buchaupt, team leader for the SSN. Students can visit the Wellness Room for information and resources, for referrals, to brainstorm ideas on how to problem solve, or to talk about how they’re feeling.
Drop by the Wellness Room!
Asking for support can be tough. Remember that there’s no wrong way to start a conversation, but if you’re struggling to find the right words to say, here are some examples of how to start a conversation with a wellness peer:
- “I’m not entirely sure where to begin.”
- “Can you explain to me what the SSN is?”
- “I’m looking for someone to talk to about…”
- “I just need someone to let me vent for a minute.”
The Wellness Room is open for anyone who needs to talk. “Whether you’ve had a rough day, are struggling with your courses, or even want to share some good news, we are more than happy to talk to anyone and everyone who needs it,” said Poore-Buchaupt. The Wellness Room provides confidential, non-judgmental listening and support and opportunities to chat with peers who care.
